No, it is not permissible for Muslims to celebrate Christmas. Celebrating Christmas or any other non-Islamic festival is considered haram for the following reasons:

    1. Imitation of Non-Believers: Islam forbids Muslims from imitating the practices of non-believers. Celebrating Christmas is seen as an imitation of Christian traditions, which is prohibited.
    2. Muslim Festivals: Islam recognizes only two festivals: ‘Eid al-Fitr and ‘Eid al-Adha, and the weekly celebration on Fridays (Yawm al-Jumu‘ah). Introducing or participating in other festivals is not allowed.
    3. Innovations (Bid‘ah): Celebrating any festival not prescribed in Islam, such as the Prophet’s Birthday (Mawlid), is considered an innovation (bid‘ah) if done as a religious act, or an imitation of non-believers if done as a tradition.

    Decorating for Christmas:

    • Decorating homes or participating in festive activities during Christmas is also forbidden as it signifies joining in the celebration of a non-Islamic festival.

    Gifts and Celebrations:

    • Exchanging gifts, holding parties, or any form of participation in Christmas activities is haram. This includes taking time off work specifically for Christmas celebrations.

    Scholarly Opinions:

    • Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymin and Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah have explicitly stated that participating in non-Islamic festivals is not permissible as it indicates approval of non-Islamic beliefs and practices, which compromises the Islamic faith.

Conclusion: Muslims are advised to treat Christmas as an ordinary day and refrain from any activities that celebrate or honor it.
