The permissibility of using perfumes that contain alcohol varies among scholars. The main points of contention are whether the alcohol in perfumes is intoxicating and whether alcohol is considered impure (najis).

    Explanation:

    1. Intoxicating Nature:
      • Some scholars argue that the alcohol found in perfumes is of the same nature as that found in intoxicating drinks and therefore should be avoided.
      • The Quran states: “O believers! Intoxicants, gambling, idols, and drawing lots for decisions1 are all evil of Satan’s handiwork. So shun them so you may be successful.” (Al-Ma’idah 5:90).
    2. Impurity (Najasa):
      • The majority view is that alcohol is impure, and therefore, any substance containing it should not be used, especially in acts of worship like prayer.
      • This means that perfumes with significant amounts of alcohol should be avoided to maintain purity.
    3. Minor Amounts of Alcohol:
      • Some scholars state that if the amount of alcohol in the perfume is minimal and does not have a significant effect, it may be permissible to use.
      • This view is based on the understanding that the negligible amount does not affect the overall purity.
    4. Transformation (Istihala):
      • If the alcohol in the perfume undergoes a complete transformation during the manufacturing process and loses its intoxicating properties, it may not be considered impure.

    Conclusion:

The use of perfumes containing alcohol is generally advised against, especially if the alcohol content is significant. However, if the alcohol content is minimal or has undergone complete transformation, it may be permissible to use. It is best to err on the side of caution and use alcohol-free perfumes to maintain purity.
