Islam forbids Muslims from keeping dogs for no reason, and the punishment for doing so is the loss of one or two qirats from their good deeds each day. However, exceptions have been made for keeping dogs for hunting, guarding livestock, and guarding crops.
It is also important to note that being kind and compassionate towards dogs if they are in a pitiful state is separate from the ruling on keeping them. It is encouraged to be kind and compassionate.
